Express Entry Category-Based Draws: Which Categories Have the Most Job Vacancies?

On May 31, 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that it would be holding category-based draws for Express Entry candidates. This means that candidates with work experience in specific occupations will be given priority when being invited to apply for permanent residency.

The following are the categories with the most job vacancies:

  • Healthcare: There are over 143,000 job vacancies in the healthcare sector, making it the most in-demand category. This includes occupations such as doctors, nurses, and pharmacists.
  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM): There are over 56,000 job vacancies in the STEM sector. This includes occupations such as software engineers, data scientists, and electrical engineers.
  • Trades: There are over 108,000 job vacancies in the trades sector. This includes occupations such as carpenters, plumbers, and electricians.
  • Agriculture and agri-food: There are over 10,000 job vacancies in the agriculture and agri-food sector. This includes occupations such as farmers, ranchers, and food processors.
  • Transport: There are over 43,000 job vacancies in the transport sector. This includes occupations such as truck drivers, pilots, and sailors.

If you have work experience in one of these occupations, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residency through the Express Entry program. To learn more, please visit the IRCC website.

The new category-based draws are part of IRCC's efforts to attract skilled workers from overseas to help fill the country's labor shortages. Canada is facing a shortage of workers in a number of key sectors, and the government is hoping that the new draws will help to address this issue.

If you are interested in immigrating to Canada, you should start the Express Entry application process as soon as possible. The demand for skilled workers in Canada is high, and the competition for spots in the Express Entry program is fierce.
